Elon Musk's X settles Donald Trump's free speech lawsuit brought after Jan. 6 ban

Elon Musk's X has agreed to settle a lawsuit President Donald Trump brought against Twitter for approximately $10 million, multiple news outlets reported.

Trump sued Twitter and Facebook officials in 2021 for barring him from the platform following the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riots, accusing the platforms of violating his free speech. Legal analysts at the time said the lawsuit had little chance of succeeding as the First Amendment applies to government entities, not private companies.

The lawsuit was dismissed in 2022 and Trump appealed. But as of Monday, the parties filed a voluntary motion to dismiss the appeal, court records show.

Now, X has agreed to settle the lawsuit for about $10 million dollars, the Wall Street Journal and CNBC reported. Earlier this year, Meta agreed to pay $25 million to settle its lawsuit.

USA TODAY reached out to Trump's legal representatives and X for comment.

Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022, and became growing ally of Trump

Musk bought Twitter in 2022 for $44 billion and renamed it X. Shortly after taking over the platform, Musk reinstated Trump's account, among other controversial figures.

Musk has become increasingly close to Trump since then. Since endorsing the former president after he was nearly assassinated in July, Musk has contributed at least $260 million to political committees that supported Trump.

Now, Musk heads the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, which is making swift moves to slash federal agencies.

Just Wednesday, Musk joined Trump in the Oval Office to order large federal workforce reductions.
