Which Dairy Queen restaurants are closing? Contents of 24 Texas locations auctioned off

A Dairy Queen franchise owner has not only closed 25 locations in Texas, but the remaining contents from a majority of those restaurants are now being auctioned off online.

A Dairy Queen spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY on Tuesday that 25 DQ restaurants owned by a single franchise owner closed last week, adding that the franchise owner continues to operate other DQ restaurants in Texas.

"These closures are an isolated event," the statement continued. "It was this franchise owner’s decision to participate in an online auction."

Despite the location closures, Texas continues to lead the country with around 560 DQ restaurants, according to the statement. There are currently more than 7,700 DQ restaurants in more than 20 countries, and all locations are franchised except for two corporate-owned locations in Minnesota, the spokesperson said.

What are Dairy Queen restaurant buyers bidding on?

The "complete contents" of 24 Dairy Queen restaurants across Texas were posted on an auction website under auction manager Local Liquidators, a full-service rental liquidator.

"Bid on a large variety of restaurant assets and related items that need to be removed from the location," reads a description of the auctions.

Auction postings contain various pictures of what bidders would be receiving, including Blizzard ice cream machines, grills, chairs, booths, and walk-in freezers. The only things not included are fixed items, Coca-Cola machines, CO2 tanks, tea brewers and IT equipment, according to the listings.

A requirement for winning buyers, which is emphasized in the listings, is that they must remove the DQ signage. Winning bidders must also bring their own help and tools for item removal, the listings say.

The bid sizes for the content within the closed Dairy Queen restaurants vary, with smaller locations going for $500-$2,000, while larger locations have bids between $2,000-$6,000, according to LocalAuctions.com.

As of Tuesday morning, bidders have a little over two days left to place an offer.
