Exxon Mobil laying off nearly 400 Texas workers after Pioneer Natural merger

Exxon Mobil is laying off nearly 400 employees in Texas after a recent merger with fellow oil and gas company Pioneer Natural.

The Texas Workforce Commission, a state agency that oversees workforce development services, made the announcement in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification or WARN notice.

WARN notices are issued when mass layoffs are announced, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

According to the notice, 397 employees at five different locations in Big Lake, Irving and Midland, Texas will be impacted. Layoffs will take place over the next two years between Dec. 31 and May 2026.

The biggest impact will be at a store located on Hidden Ridge in Irving, about 16 miles northwest of Dallas.

When asked about the layoffs, Exxon Mobil said in a statement to USA TODAY Friday that impacted employees were offered “transition roles” and some turned the offers down.

“Our employment strategy has not changed,” the company said in the statement. “The success of this merger depends heavily on the retention of Pioneer’s talented workforce, and more than 1,900 Pioneer employees were offered jobs as part of the merger.”
