BMW recalls 2024: Check the list of models recalled this year

Several recalls were issued this year for BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) vehicles.

The recall report data is from Jan. 1, 2024, to Dec. 27, 2024. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) compiles data from the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recalls by automobile manufacturers.

USA TODAY reached out to BMW about the recalls.

"Customer safety and satisfaction are top priority for the BMW Group. As the leading manufacturer of premium vehicles, we are committed to providing our customers with vehicles of the highest quality," a spokesperson from the luxury vehicles company said in a statement "Recent media discussions over the cluster of recalls in the past few months should not be interpreted as an indication that the number or frequency of recalls has increased in 2024. In fact, several recent quality studies show that the BMW Group is performing well compared to its competitors and is ahead of its key competitors in relevant studies."

USA TODAY’s automotive recall database tracks car recalls by the manufacturer. The recalls that are posted on the webpage are from the NHTSA’s database. In addition, the NHTSA website allows you to find car recalls by a vehicle’s identification number or VIN.

BMW recalls of 2024

Jan. 24: Recall for adhesive residue issue

BMW recalled certain 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre electric vehicles because the ground connection cable between the front electric motor and the vehicle chassis may contain adhesive residue which can increase electrical resistance and cause an insufficient ground, according to the NHTSA report. An insufficient electrical ground can increase the risk of electrical shock during service work and can increase the risk of a fire, the report said.

Feb. 23: Recall for potential tailgate detachment

BMW recalled certain 2024 XM vehicles because the tailgate panel may detach from the mounting structure due to improper adhesive bonding that occurred during manufacturing. If the panel continued to separate, then, in a rare case, the panel could detach from the vehicle which could become a hazard to other road users, BMW told NHTSA.

March 14: Recall for case detachment on motorycles

BMW recalled its BMW motorcycle side cases (BMW Motorcycle Dealer Accessory Side Cases for R 1300 GS).

The side case latch hooks may not snap properly into the lock which can cause the lid to open, according to the NHTSA. When this happens, the case could detach from the motorcycle, the report said. If a case or lid detaches, the objects within the case could fall out, creating a road hazard for oncoming motorists. As a result, this will increase the risk of a crash.

April 24: Recall for air bag rupture

BMW recalled certain 2014-2015 2 Series Coupe (228i, 228i xDrive, M235i), 3 Series Sedan (320i, 320i xDrive, 328i, 328i xDrive, 335i, 335i xDrive, M3, 328d, 328d xDrive), 4 Series Coupe (428i, 428i xDrive, 435i, 435i xDrive, M4), and 2015 4 Series Gran Coupe (428i, 428i xDrive, 435i, 435i xDrive) vehicles.

In the NHTSA report, the company said that the head air bag inflator may fail at the weld joint which can cause gas to leak from the inflator or cause a rupture. If an inflator ruptures, it may cause sharp metal fragments to enter or exit the vehicle. In addition, an inflator that leaks gas may only partially inflate during a crash. Both defects will increase the risk of injury, the report said.

Potential number of units affected: 5,761

May 15: Recall for seatbelt malfunction

BMW recalled certain ertain 2024 XM, 2025 BMW X5 sDrive40i, X5 xDrive40i, X5 M60i, X5 M, X5 xDrive50e, X6 xDrive40i, X6 M60i, X6 M, X7 xDrive40i, X7 M60i, and Alpina XB7 vehicles.

In the NHTSA report, the luxury manufacturer said the seat belt system may not detect that the passengers in the vehicle are belted. As a result, the seat belt warning light will not illuminate and can cause the supplemental restraint system (SRS) to not deploy properly during a crash, the report said. When a seat belt warning light does not alert the driver that their passengers are unbelted or the SRS system fails to deploy, it can increase the risk of injury in a crash.
