Is Starbucks cutting its menu? Coffee chain announces offerings will be 'optimized'

More change is underway at Starbucks, which recently announced plans to cut some items across its food and beverage menu.

Brian Niccol, newly appointed chairman and CEO, outlined the "fundamental change in strategy" on a Tuesday earnings call, noting that recently enacted changes like the return of the condiment bar and extending free refills to all customers will help get the Seattle-based coffee chain "Back to Starbucks."

"Over the past four months, we've been focused on getting Back to Starbucks and those things that have always set us apart, a welcoming coffeehouse where people gather and where we serve the finest coffee handcrafted by our skilled baristas," Niccol said.

Niccol, who vowed to prioritize customers and boost sales, said the company has been focusing on "simplifying" the menu, but did not offer specifics on what food or beverage items would be cut. Starbucks has also removed the extra charge for non-dairy milk.
