  • Dollar General CEO and Director Todd Vasos said he hopes that in the near future, the retailer will be able to offer same-day delivery at all Dollar General stores that currently work with DoorDash.
  • The company's move may be in response to pressure from other big-name retailers offering the service, like Walmart, Target and Amazon.

Dollar General is joining the ranks of retailers offering same-day delivery with a new service called DG Delivery, available at a limited number of stores this holiday season.

During the company's third quarter earnings call on Thursday, Dollar General CEO and Director Todd Vasos said the discount retailer launched the pilot same-day delivery program in September at about 75 stores. Dollar General is working with a third-party partner to offer the service, but Vasos did not disclose which one.

Dollar General currently works with DoorDash to offer delivery at about 16,000 stores. Vasos said he hopes that in the near future, the retailer will be able to offer same-day delivery at all Dollar General stores that currently work with DoorDash. Dollar General operates more than 19,000 stores nationwide.

Though Vasos did not clarify why the company launched its delivery pilot, it may be because of pressure from other big-name retailers offering the service, like Walmart, Target and Amazon.
